Evolfo is the sound that breaks through the fuzz on the low end of your radio dial and echoes out the back door of a pink neon lit bar. Mainstays of New York City’s clubs and DIY spaces, as well as the finest basement venues coast to coast, Evolfo has cut wide tracks through the U.S., gaining initiates and devotees every time they cram onto a stage and deliver their raucous live show. ‘Last of the Acid Cowboys,’ the band’s debut LP, melts down decades worth of eclectic and bizarro records and puts on wax a house shaking mix of garage rock, psych soul, spiritual funk and ecstatic freakout.

Marco Benevento is used to doing a lot of things for himself: Since he launched his solo career six years ago, Benevento has co-founded the label that releases his music, The Royal Potato Family, and built the studio, Fred Short, where he works every day that he’s not on the road. And in the past, of course, he’s written, arranged and played his largely instrumental anthems, leading a band from behind his customized piano and a tiny armada of drum machines and sequencers, keyboards and pedals.

On his stellar new album, ‘Gotta Get Back,’ Seth Walker excavates the roots of his love affair with music, by reuniting the family that helped spark the fire in him all those years ago. Walker, who grew up on a multi-family commune in North Carolina, gathered his sister along with his parents, who had been divorced for 20 years, to record the album’s beautiful, sweeping string parts, all of which were arranged by his father. Produced by The Wood Brothers‘ drummer/keyboardist Jano Rix and recorded primarily at Zac Brown’s Southern Ground studio in Nashville, ‘Gotta Get Back‘ is a crowning achievement in Walker’s celebrated career.

Prometheus Risen is a free-flowing, no-holds-barred, in-the-moment encounter based on daredevil instincts, a shared arrangement aesthetic and mutual trust. While all the keyboard parts, Moog bass lines, ambient washes, textures, loops and huge groove playing on the kit might suggest a precisely-crafted project involving multiple layers of overdubbing and tons of post-production work, the entire album was in fact done live in the studio. Together on Prometheus Risen, Chamberlain and Haas present spontaneous composition at its finest.

The Vinyl Guide's "Vinyl Artist Series" episodes showcases new artists who have committed themselves to the vinyl record format. These are totally independent artists who wish to share their music and hopefully encourage listeners to pick up their music on vinyl.
